SPLIT  and SALONA

Split is situated  in the middle of Dalmatia, Solin/Salona are situated  5 km northeast of Split

Description:

After being welcomed by guide, passengers  will be  taken  through  the  path  of  history,  first to Salona, which existed before Split.

Today, Salona is the most important archaeological site in Croatia and South-eastern Europe with preserved archaeological remains from Roman, early Christian and early medieval period. Walking with the guide around remains of temples, amphitheatres, first- century baths, early Christian churches, and burial grounds. Salona is first mentioned in 119  BC as the  centre  of the  Illyrian tribe  of  Delmata.  The  biggest  expansion  it reaches  in the  4th century  during  the  rule of  Empire Diocletian, who  built  great palace in vicinity of Salona. Around  the mid-15th century Salona was attacked by the Huns and the Goths. Survived inhabitants run off on nearby islands and in Diocletians palace, where the life of new town  began,  the life of today’s Split.

After free time for exploring this archaeological site, next stop is Diocletian’s palace, today  heart of inner city of Split and part of  UNESCO world  heritage.  Visit of  well  preserved  cellars of Diocletian’s Palace which  architectural purpose  was to raise the imperial residential area in the upper  floor, walk up the stairs to Peristil. Peristil was meant  to be used by Diocletian and the cult of living son of Jupiter, whose temple will also be seen.

Admire Cathedral of St. Duje (St. Duje is patron of the Split), originally the  mausoleum of Diocletian, for which  is said that  is the oldest Cathedral in the World.

The sightseeing will end  in Riva the beautiful waterfront with a lot of restaurants and cafes.
